Gabbro is the same rock as basalt, only with larger grains because it cooled more slowly in a plutonic rather than extrusive setting. Like the rocks at stop 12, these ophiolite rocks have been deformed and distorted during their travels to the California subduction zone during the Jurassic. It is postulated that these too were in or near an oceanic fracture zone.
